ICYMI

Friday, Oct. 09, 2015
During Pope Francis’ visit to the United States, I listened to a couple of his speeches broadcast live, and read the transcripts of most of the others. As a professional wordsmith, I’m in awe of the way the man wields language; as a Catholic, I’m stunned by the power with which he communicates the Good News.  >>>

Prosperity gospel is a travesty of the Good News of Christ

Friday, Oct. 09, 2015
Perhaps the most appalling aspect of televangelism is what is called “the prosperity gospel;” that is, the conviction that God rewards faithful Christians with money and a prosperous mode of life when they support a ministry financially.  >>>

The spirit of Malawi evident at Mass

Friday, Oct. 09, 2015
In a building with no glass in the windows, a cement floor, and row upon row of hard, backless wooden benches, I experienced one of the most spiritually fulfilling Masses I have ever been privileged to attend. This Mass, spoken in Chichewa (the native language of Malawi), brought to life the “community of saints” that we are all part of through our shared baptism. >>>

During our year-long tribute to the religious orders who have served in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, we have naturally focused mostly on those orders like the Holy Cross Sisters and the Daughters of Charity that have sent many members here and whose service has been most notable. Eight days as a volunteer on the trail of Pope Francis

Friday, Oct. 09, 2015
Pope Francis’ visit to the United States was historic on many fronts. His journey also holds special meaning for me because I had the opportunity to spend more than eight days supporting the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as they welcomed him. The experience was a whirlwind of activity, emotion and singular moments.  It was also overwhelmingly a week of love; not only a message of love from the Holy Father, but also love returned exponentially from the people who came from near and far to share fellowship and a moment with Pope Francis. >>>

SALT LAKE CITY — “With God in your life there are no barriers. … If you really work toward a goal, you will achieve it,” said Ernesto Méndez, a Sacred Heart parishioner and a member of the Neocatechumenal Way in Utah, describing what he learned after traveling to see Pope Francis during the Holy Father’s trip to the United States. >>>
