The Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico Nov. 1-2, is the focus of an exhibition at Juan Diego Catholic High School under the direction of Natalie Scenters-Zapico, an English and theology teacher who is originally from El Paso, Texas, where setting up altar as part of the Day of the Dead celebration is a very big tradition.

There are 17 Trappist monasteries in the United States, five for women and 12 for men. Right after the Second World War there were only three for men and one for women. Veterans began filling the men’s monasteries and none more than Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky. In the space of 10 years, between 1944 and 1954, they founded no less than five new monasteries from California to New York.

It is not by coincidence that Pope Francis’ reform of laws pertaining to marriage was announced on Sept. 8, prior to his visit to Cuba and the United States, on the evening of the Synod of Bishops, and shortly before the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy that will begin on Dec. 8, the very same day these changes to marriage law take effect. Pope Francis’ promulgation of the Motu Proprio Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus and Mitis et Misericors Iesus was driven by a pastoral desire to lift the darkness of doubt from people’s hearts about their marital status.

In September, I spent just over a week on the African continent along with three other Americans, two trip leaders and a cohort of Catholic Relief Services’ leadership and support staff during a trip to Malawi that was hosted and organized by CRS, the international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
