Student's science fair project garners national attention

KEARNS — Manny Condas discovered something unusual about the blood types of his family members while conducting his science fair project, and the results were of interest to the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Condas, a seventh-grader at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, came up with the idea for his project by visiting his mother at the Intermountain Medical Center Transfusion Service, where she works.

OGDEN — After Saint Joseph Catholic High School Hall of Fame coach and alumni Rick Stockel left the school to take a position at Weber High School last year, many were wondering what would happen to the girls’ basketball program.

The answer came three months later when former college coach Joe Cravens decided to take over the girls’ program, said Alex Salvo, Saint Joseph athletic director.

 Fifty years ago, Harper Lee published "To Kill a Mockingbird," a tale of a girl whose lawyer father defends a Black man accused of raping a white girl in the pre-Civil Rights South.

"It’s a timeless book," said the Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of Salt Lake City. "It’s something for the ages because it speaks to the heart of being a human being, and the way God calls us to live in community."
