Cardinal DiNardo marks Respect Life month

WASHINGTON (USCCB) — In a statement to mark Respect Life Month, October 2010, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston addressed direct threats to human life and called Catholics to “constantly witness to the inestimable worth and dignity of each human life through a loving concern for the good of others.” He also encouraged participation in the worldwide “Vigil for All Nascent Human Life” called for by Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Advent.

A street named after Catholic School mascot

OGDEN- On Oct. 14, alumni, families and friends of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Schools will be gathering at Dee Park to begin with the celebrations of the grand opening of Jayhawk Way, a street that will help people easily locate the schools.

Knight makes state history with third award

TAYLORSVILLE — During the past four years, nearly 700 men in Utah have joined the Knights of Columbus. Much of the credit for the recent growth goes to Chuck Dover, Jr., who is completing his third term as past state deputy. During each of his terms, the Utah Knights exceeded their quota for new members, earning Dover a Circle of Honor Award from the national organization. He is the only Utah Knight to have earned three of these awards, and he accomplished that despite having a different membership director during each of his terms.
Dover joined the Knights in 1981 as a member of the charter council at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in West Valley City, but it wasn’t until after he moved to Saint Martin de Porres Parish that his job allowed him to become more active in the organization. >>>

A Catholic hostage will narrate her experiences

SALT LAKE CITY - Ingrid Betancourt, the Colombian presidential candidate who was kidnapped and held for six years by a rebel group, will be a guest speaker at the McCarthey Family Foundation Fifth Annual Lecture Series on Oct. 23.
“The reason that Ingrid Betancourt is coming here is to continue the McCarthey Family Foundation that focuses primarily on independent journalism,” said Phil McCarthey, coordinator of the lecture series.
Ingrid Betancourt was a Colombian presidential candidate in 2002 but was kidnapped and became a global symbol of freedom and human resistance after she spent six years in captivity, held in the jungle by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). >>>

Clergy Convocation provides priests with learning, fellowship

Twice a year, priests in the Diocese of Salt Lake City gather for a week away from the demands of their parishes, praying together and expanding their knowledge on a specific theme. This year, the focus of the Fall Clergy Convocation, Oct. 4-7, was the upcoming changes to the Roman Missal, but for many of the priests the event is primarily about fellowship. >>>

Stewardship effort gets underway in diocese

SALT LAKE CITY – The Diocese of Salt Lake City is undertaking a stewardship initiative to help parishioners meet Saint Ignatius’ first principle: that the goal of our lives is to be with God forever.

Msgr. Fitzgerald honored for his contribution to CCS

SALT LAKE CITY –In 65 years, Catholic Community Services has grown from an organization that primarily provided adoption services to one that offers a wide range of programs, from help with utility payments to refugee resettlement. Throughout those years, CCS has been guided by a number of different hands, but none has been more involved than Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, vicar general of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Msgr. Fitzgerald began his involvement with CCS in 1969, when he served the first of his two terms as executive director, and has served in some way on the executive committee since.
“He has a personal passion for the agency, I can speak to that right from my heart because I see it every meeting that we have with monsignor,” said Kevin Potts, the board president, on Oct. 8, during a staff ceremony marking the agency’s 65th anniversary. >>>

Saint Rose of Lima Parish has new priest

PARK CITY – Father José Nestor P. Lachica has wasted no time getting involved in the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The week he arrived in Utah, he met with brother priests at the Fall Convocation in Park City, then traveled to Layton, where he will serve as a parish priest when not following orders as an Army chaplain.
Fr. Lachica’s home diocese, in the Philippines, holds retreats but not convocations, he said, adding that he enjoyed the local event. “It’s an informative week. It helps you understand the Church in this particular area.” >>>
